Should smoke be coming from my ESC

so for the first time since getting my new old toy - an rc10 b3- i fired her up. in doing so i noticed that the little mtroniks sonik 3 eco 27 esc started billowing smoke, became very hot and the motor was spinning madly. i tried this a few times but with the same result. the battery is a 7.4v 2s 4000mah 40c bionic hardcase lipo. im pretty sure the input voltage of the esc can handle the battery so im at a loss as to what the issue could be

any thoughts?
