gm120 profile and gearing problems

ive just fitted an gm 120 and a novak 10.5 which i fitted to my touring car and cooked the motor in two heats! dont get me wrong it was rapid lol but i had followed the advise of the person i bought the electrics from and ran a very simular overall gear ratio to what he had used and proved to be reliable. is it a programming issue or gearing as the speed alters the advance while driving??
