The raised spring cups are indeed to give you a greater range of adjustment, you can get away with the standard ones but you will be right at the bottom of the threads
I noticed that when I started learning about suspension setup and ride height.

My BJ4 came equipped with truck blue front springs - they work well, actually (on astroturf), so I just got a complete set of truck fronts to experiment with. A friend with a Tamiya 501X also liked them so much, I gave him the original pair.

Edit: Turns out they aren't truck fronts - truck fronts are way longer. No idea what they are, now. BJ4 stock springs, perhaps.
