Spot on Carl, and practically word for word what i put in a PM to him. Bad advice can lead beginners to give up on the hobby so it is important they are pointed in the right direction.

Ginge, try the spring trick see if it helps. If not then i think you can move up to a 22/23 pinion as i run a 20/21 on a 6.5
That might help dull the initial take off. Add a few more grams around the front and middle so your car is up around the 1600g mark.
If none of that helps then start reducing the punch on your speedo in 5 or 10% increments. I haven't used your model of speedo so i'm not sure what a typical setting is.
