is it ok to run a 2wd buggy with no fan on the esc ?

iv been running a 9t brushless system with 11.1v battery with a fan on the esc with a 7.2v limit
i got a new car and the first time i used it with the brushless on it the esc decided to catch fire and i think it might have something to do with the fan on 11.1v
would it be okay to use it with no fan on the esc on a 2wd buggy,im not driving it hard im just having a bit of fun with it realy.
