I had this problem with my Netgear stuff, though it wasn't the router. I was using WN111 wireless adapters on XP, and the Netgear network management software 'clashes' with XP's wireless management software (called something like Windows Zero Wireless' or similar). I went to admin, and prevented the Windows service from running, and now it runs fine. I found this on Netgear's forum.

I don't know if it'll help you, but if your desktop uses a Netgear wireless adapter, it may do the trick. If you don't have any installed software (aside from drivers) installed then don't stop the Windows service from running - it definately won't help.
