just a thought, the lipo cells, how are they made up, they can't be 2s can they, are they 2s2p construction, if so, will that mean they will not be roar legal (and possibly BRCA illegal) just a thought?

I've been using the non hard cased 5500mah packs from Maxamps and they are awesome.
![]() I really don't care if they are BRCA legal or not as I only participate at club level at the moment but I didn't think ANY lipo's were going to be BRCA legal anyway? |

When you say hard cased is that what they are? or are they in the maxamp skins which look like thick lexan?

They are 2s3p construction, the cases are a hard (i reckon 1.5 - 2mm plastic then coated with thick heat shrink as well. With these strapped down in a b44 i think they are far safer with a tray and shell than exposed in a touring car where the body offers little to no protection against a car going a full speed hard cased or not!! I could see how a lipo could easily come out of a touring car not out of a buggy. Just my opinion.

The big problem with hard cased LiPo's is that you can't see the physical condition of the cells.
This is a very important safety issue as if there is any 'puffing' on the cells then charging them will almost certainly result in a fire situation as they eventually split and oxygen get's in. This has happened before in the UK on more than one occassion. As with any LiPo battery, charger type is very important. The Cell Pro 4s charger has algorithm balancing which means that if there are any detected problems with the cells then it shuts down. None dedicated balancing chargers simply do not do this. Using a Cell Pro charger means that it's safe to walk away whilst it's charging and also the pack life will increase dramatically. The pigtail balancing lead from the packs are not generic but can easily be replaced to become compatible. LiPo is the future in my opinion but a lack of knowledge on the technology is dangerous.

Unfortunately, I've just heard that the maxamps lexan skins will not be apporved by our federation as they are not considered "hardcased".
Since I also can't use my GP3700's anymore I'm in trouble foor the 2008 outdoor season. |

This is where the case for hard cases gets silly. Is hard case defined as normal plastic that in a large impact will crack/fracture/splinter? possibly puncturing cells? or hard thick lexan (which is used in bullet proof vests) As it is i have bought these to use at club level only. As i said in an earlier comment, a touring car using these hard cases is far more likely to have a set of lipos coming out of the car, or to be struck by another car, whereas in a buggy which has a tray or tub chassis and shell that completly surrounds it. Again just my opinion, i do agree with rob's view that with a hard case it is impossible to see potential swelling/defects with the battery's - an opinion echoed by long time manufacturer of lipo's maxamps - i spoke to them for some time about this over xmas before deciding to buy some. They have even gone so far as to make a dvd on the safe use of lipo's, these are the kinds of people the brca should be talking to and collecting useful/relavent info on lipo's.
