Default Fresh Start - Motor & Esc

Just had an expensive club night! First time out in public and we've stuffed the speedo and the motor's looking none to healthy either.
Daniel managed 3 heats, with the motor SP v3 7.5 getting v.hot. In the 4th heat after the 4 minute call it got too hot and took out the speedo - SP LPF 2.0

We'd had 5 or 6 runs at the park and the motor was hot but nothing blew.

Gearing was 21/87

Had I over geared it?

I'd bought him the 7.5 to tame things down a little, only been racing 9 months.

I don't want to make the same mistakes again.

Thinking SP 6.5 or 5.5 with either LRP SXX TC V2 or SP GT Pro both with fans.

How do I work out the gearing limits?

Thanks

I would say the car would be under geared at 21/87. I have been running 22/23T pinions on 6.5 motors.

I would recommend the Tekin RS Pro speedo and a Tekin Redline S 6.5 motor.

I have just put this set up in my Durango, it runs much cooler than the Nosram ESC and motor i ran previous to this.

I was running a Speed Passion 7.5 in my Durango indoor it got warm but nothing to worry about gearing 24/std spur gear

Outdoors been running a Speed Passsion 6.5 with a 23 or 24 pinion and LRP SXX with no fans been fine

Also i have a Speed Passion 5.5 used it for one race then went back to the 6.5 witch is plenty fast enough in my opinion

Cheers Paul, with that info we'll go for new SP 6.5, I'm concerned that a 5.5 would be too much for him.

Is it possible to under gear that wouldn't make it get too hot would it? It would just be slow, right?

I've been through the drive train and it seems free enough.

No fans on the LRP - impresses me.

Thanks Nigel.

That's the same set up I've got. I've ran outside in 38 degree temps and the ESC has been fine but the motor has got formidably hot every race (5 race days now). Apart from getting very hot nothing has happened but after deciding to get a bit better advice and checking the gearing charts for the LPF 2.0 and the Durango it looks like the minimum pinion is a 24 (I was on a 23 and will now go to a 25 to see how that goes). I don't run with any fans and it's no problem for the ESC but I would love to be able to put one on the motor. It may have to be the Tresrey shell option to see if that's possible, but that's another thread...

Was that getting hot with a SP 6.5 or SP 7.5?

That was with a 7.5. To be honest though when you get the gearing sorted I don't think you need to go for a 6.5 as this motor seems more than fast enough for an intermediate. The manufacturer gearing range is 24t to 29t so I'd try that before making any major changes, I think it's a good combo providing you can squeeze it in.

How do I work out the gearing range? I cannot see it in the instructions?

http://www.speedpassion.net/uploadfi...eb25th2010.pdf This says it should have a ratio of 7.5 to 9.0. Then page 33 in the TD manual (I couldn't find it till pointed in the right direction) says that range is 24t to 28t. I said 29t earlier but couldn't remember, just checked now and it's 28t.
