Just thought I would ask here as I am sure there are a few green laners here! I am thinking of getting a cheap 4X4. Narrowed it down to Discovery, but have seen a Frontera on a garage forecourt. Now before you laugh, it is fully off-road equipped so not as gay as a normal one. Lifted, mud tyres, guards, snorkel, spots, its got everything I want, and is cheap enough, but....... Its got a chavalier engine. the 2l 8v C20NE one. Ive had plenty of chavaliers and calibras with the same engine and its been ok.....(if you get used to ignoring the bloody orange warning light)but wondered if anyone has tried one offroad to see if it's any good compared to the diesel 2.5 disco. I know the disco will be better all round, but this is fully equipped for pennies, so if its even half as good I am gonna consider it.

Cheers in advance!

Some of them came with an Isuzu engine,a much better engine, they are OK off road if all the junk is removed, like running boards etc.

You might struggle getting parts for the Frontera more abroad than parts for a Disco or other Landy.

It might be cheap for a reason,be carefull you don`t buy someone elses mistake, check well for rot,any odd vibrations or anything that could be costly to repair.

Good luck

Cheers for that! I'm gonna have a good look over both (I've spotted a nice disco on fleabay). I see what you mean about parts, I was thinking at least with a vauxhall I know my way around it blindfolded (if it is the c20ne) as I spent my teenage years dissassembling them and fitting various chavvy upgrades in a vain attempt to make my Chavalier go faster.

Hey Codpiece,

Im into the whole green laning scene and currently own three Landrovers, A discovery 300TDI, a 90 V8 and a freelander !!

Advice wise from me as I have seen fronteras offroad, I have seen fronteras with a lot of kit on, 2 inch lifts mud terrains trick shocks the lot and they still struggle to follow standard Disco's anywhere.

If it was me get a standard disco and slap mud tyres on it, also go for a Diesel engine (200 or 300TDI), get a snorkel fitted and go into as deeper water as you dare!
DO NOT GO FOR A PETROL ENGINE, they do not have the low down torque needed for serious off road and die if water gets anywhere near them!

The other one to look at is the Suzuki Vitara (you might think I have lost my marbles suggesting one!) fit a lift and mud tyres and these things are unstoppable due to being lightweight (check them on youtube!!!)
Disco's and 90's can ground out on the axles in mud!!

Good point! didnt think of the water/petrol issue. I never thought about a Vitara either, will have to have a butchers! What sort of fuel economy do you get on the road with the disco? I would need to use it on road too, and would have to travel long distances dragging my track car to events next year so Im kind of hoping to kill two birds with one stone!

Cheers

I used to have a 300tdi Disco and I was doing 36mpg so you'll have no problems with the fuel bills. and I was doing 27mpg with a 26' twin axle caravan on.

Have you thought about a 88 series or a 90?

I've got a 1967 Landrover Lightweight with a tasty V8 in. It's great, but I've been embarassed by those little suzuki things once or twice - they punch well above their weight (their weight not being much is the secret indeed )

I've got a 96 Toyota Landcruiser, bullet proof. never fails, capable off road (no defender though!) well worth a look.
only my opinion,
Mines been an incredable work horse and cleans up nice as a family holiday vehicle if i cant stretch to the Audi's fuel consumption...

Your Audi drinks more than a 1996 Landcruiser?? Assume it must a hot one.

Wink

How cheap is the frontera, if were talking £600ish then u could use till broken, sell the bits off it and weigh it in, any more then buy an old defender
think that an old defender will look better to drive around in than a lifted 4x4
Alfonzo, yes 16mpg 2ton family estate, RS6

Thanks for all the comments so far

That's the cavalier on stilts (frontera) which I am rapidly going off of now, I have thought of a defender, but they are a little bit more than a decent disco from what I can see. And I really cant afford much more

That Frontera definitely looks like one to avoid! Has he used an old vacuum cleaner pipe for the snorkel?
Also the bushwires are meant to be attached to the bullbar, not the bonnet/wings (although they are illegal for road use anyway!!)

I would look for a disco, just make sure you check the boot floor under the carpet - if it's rusty then walk away, on 4 doors check the inner wheelarch when you open the door and the rear seatbelt mountings - again corrosion here is mot failure. You can get defenders for that money but they won't have a tdi engine, although you could transplant one from a disco in the future.
