Default RC10 6-gear rockcrusher mod - lubing steel gears

Hi, I posted this on the vintage forum - but no replies - hoping that this might be a better place for the post... I'm particularly concerned about the lubing requirements for steel/steel gears. Any ideas or experience?

Thanks!
Ty

Has anyone actually done the mod where a pair of outdrive gears with the cups dremeled off are used to replace the nylon idler gears in the original RC10 6 gear box?

I've got an extra set of worn outdrives, and have quasi test fitted them on the idler shafts it to see if they all line up okay. So far so good...

Any considerations I should know about? Would the steel/steel gear mesh be a wear and/or friction disaster? How should it be lubricated?

I'd imagine it'd be pretty close to indestructible though...

Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated, thanks.

Not 100% but tamiya ceramic grease could be a good bet. Someone will confirm.

In RallyX we use metal / metal on the diff ring and pinion gears without issue.
Personally I use a thin smearing of http://www.s-m-d.co.uk/jbr-014-crown...ease-i344.html

Thanks for the replies - looks like an appropriate grease will be the way to go.

Has anyone actually done this by chance? I know it's much better to just throw in a vintage stealth box, but the 6gear with its symphonic whine really is the heart of the old goldpan, and I can't consider swapping it out...

FWIW the plastic idler gears are still available even here in the UK, so at the moment I'm just running them. This metal gear idea is a just a side project with some spare parts...

Cheers,
Ty
