Newbie - want to get a RC need help/guidance

Hi everyone

Many may years ago I used to race a Tamyia Monster truck which in those days I built from scratch. Used it for years until the NiCads had no life and then drifted away from the sceane.

Anyway nearly 20 years on I want back in thing is I'm very very naive to whate going on I'm aware brushless motors are now way faster than petrols with no hassle and are the way to go. Also Lipo is the power source if you want crazy fast but Nicads are still in use?


Anyway will not be racing anyone just fun in our garden which is 300 ft so lots of room. I want off road.
From a glance I like the look of Durango and serpent also Losi looks good.

I don't want to spend a lot size wise I'd say 1/10th scale is probably fine for my use. I'd happily buy used too infact open to offers.

I glanced on eBay and found looks cheap but is it reliable any good?

If youre just bashing you'll not go far wrong with something like a HPI Blitz ready to run truck, plus a cheap lipo and a Core UAC50 charger.

Everybody has differing opinions of what's best but you've picked a good forum to canvass opinions.

Plus, in the For Sale section there's always something worth having from people who've moved on to the latest kit and are looking to move on perfectly serviceable stuff.

That Bliz isn't doing it for me don't like the looks or style of it.

I'd be after an open wheeled buggy or open wheeled truck off roader

Hmmm, never heard of HSP. Odd that theres a seller in Ireland doing them and one in Canada and the ad wordings are virtually identical. My biggest worry with buying unknown brand stuff is spares backup. If this seller disappears can you easily get bits you're going to break such as front wishbones? Those shock towers look a bit bendy, how much would one cost to change? Remember the saying "buy cheap, buy twice". I know it's a full blown racer so some may consider it sacrilege to use one for bashing but maybe an RC10B4 ready to run off eBay would be a good base point. Fairly simple, known quantity and spares available from almost anywhere, plus good upgrade path if you wanted to do so.

B4s and B4.1s are great for driving and if you ever wanted to can become very competitive

Does my initial suggestion of Durango or Serpant seem overkill for what I'd be using it for?

Or are they simply out of budget really


The team Associates appears to be a well made buggy with spares readily available from any model shop (though with Internet buying is that really an advantage? I rarely get the chance to get into town so online buying would be cheaper).

Losi looks nice seems to be a step ahead of Associates? Am I right.
Kyosho - when I raced Tamiya and Kyosho were all you could buy and they were better than Tamiya. Again I like the look of some of these buggies.

Serpant again looks nice.


Lastly just popped out to garden not cut the lawn in a while it's 4-6inches tall. Would any buggies run on that or just burn out the motor. Just thinking about winter usage. Summer I cut twice a week to 1-2 inches.
