I put all the access of receiver areial in my radio box then only feed a slight amount through the lid then goes in to a aerial tube
From 1 aerial tube i can get 3 lots out of 1 tube the reason for this is to protect the aerial from getting broken of the longer it is the more chance you have got to get it snapped of I have done this for many years and had no problem with any range problem or interference crtpromachine

I leave the aerial of my Spektrum receiver tucked away in the chassis and have never had a problem.

I've noticed if the 2.4 reciever wire gets bent it looks like it could fracture / break as it's pretty brittle (sanwa receivers) can the wire be replaced / mended ?

The wire on the receiver can be replaced it is not advisable to repair them if they break or have a fracture on them
Most of the receivers have the aerial where it just clips on some do need soldering on to the memory board though;
