PC/Laptop Gurus - Help Part2

We have a PC at home running Vista.
When we click on "shutdown", the PC goes through all the normal routines of closing down, but then restarts itself.
I have checked and double checked for a Virus - runs clean.
I have downloaded all available updates that I can find, but nothing seems to cure it.

Any ideas?

sometimes an USB device causes this (I had it with a webcam)

are you clicking on the power button on the menu, or going to the smaller menu that pops up, as in Vista, you can set the 'power button' to do all sorts except shutdown....

You can make it shut the machine down aswell

I know... and every now and then, when an update comes along, I lose the ability to make the computer go fully to sleep to.... grrrrr

Tried both. Neither are shutting the machine down and as far as I am aware, I havent changed any settings.

Try this first, there are many reasons why it can happen though:

1) Start > Control Panel > Power Options > High Performance

2) Start > Control Panel > Device Manager > Keyboards > select your keyboard > right click + Properties > Power Management > make sure the box is unchecked for "Allow this device to wake the computer"

3) Start > Control Panel > Device Manager > Mice and other pointing devices > select your mouse > right click + Properties > Power Management > make sure the box is unchecked for "Allow this device to wake the computer"

4) Close Device Manager window

Now try to shutdown.
