Hello folks!, I'm new to this forum, and wondered if I could ask some advice.
I have recently purchased what i'm sure of is a kyosho lazer zxr/s In fact having examined all the exploded views I can on-line i'm happy i've identified the car. However I have a feeling it is something of a combination of the two. It has a full carbon chassis, gold shocks, white nylon front gearbox and a blue spur gear mount. It is in very good condition and I intend get it up and running with the few parts I need further to complete. I also wish to race the car, but haven't been involved in rc racing since the early 90's when I used to go and watch, but could never afford!! Is this car capable of keeping up with modern kits?, I am only a begginer so I figure the car might outweigh my skills for a reasonable length of time anyway?, or do you think i'd be best selling on ebay and buying an alternative modern kit? Also does the Lazer ZX 5 Body shell fit the ZXR??, if so figured that might be a way of making it look a little more modern (a sheep in wof clothing) Any comment would be welcomed |

I doubt the ZX-5 shell will fit your Lazer ZX-R, but you can still get the old shells for the ZX-R off ebay. I think the company is called camtec, but you might want to check this.

As far as i know Kamtec don't do ZX-R repro shells they do optima mid etc but not the Lazer, used shells do come up on e-bay from time to time but new shells are very rare and if you do find one you will pay quite a bit for one. There's a guy down under who does repros of the Lazer ZX shell which will fit the ZX-R and he sells on e-bay sometimes.
Might be worth posting some pics as the ZX-R and ZX-S are quite different but from what you have said in your post sounds more like a ZX-R which came with the gold shocks and the white front gearbox was an up-grade for them back in the day |

There isn't a Lazer ZXR/S. It's definitely a Lazer ZX or ZX-R, the ZX-S is quite a different beast. A picture would identify exactly which version it is.
Good cars, they are perfect to get you going and more than capable at club level. The nylon front gearbox solves the real achilles heel of the car, the other is the wishbone mounts which I suspect will have been replaced with alloy mounts already. It will handle any modern motor you throw at it. Most of the spares are still available to order from Time Tunnel Models and Ben racing. Modern high end buggies do have some advantages, such as much more adjustability, but most of these advantages will make no difference to you until your driving improves. They are good solid cars that can take a beating, a modern 4wd will be lighter but won't take the beating of a beginner like the ZX-R. Once you get the hang of racing you will then have a better idea what you want to upgrade to. Bodies for the Lazer ZX-R aren't available. For bodies Kamtec do the Optima Mid Custom body which can be made to fit, for the ZX body see here http://www.tamiyaclub.com/trades_model.asp?cid=48650

A ZXRS does kind of exist! I built one using the best parts of the ZXR and the ZXS.
![]() It's quite different from this now as i refined the concept further with wider rear wing, teamline hubs, losi shocks, lowered CoG rear wing mount and more titanium. I'm actually quicker with this car than my TRF501X.. It's a very forgiving car to drive and light enough to be quick. |
