Default Which pinion with 7.5t motor?

Hi All,

At the weekend I used a 22t pinion with the standard zx-5 spur. Out of the corners the car seemed very light and 'revvy', eventually the ESC temperature cut-out was activated.

The next pinion I have is a 24t, will that make much difference with it only have 2 extra teeth?

What motor?

looking at your banner its say LRP are you using a X12 7.5, then I would start on a 19 pinion (about 10.2:1). X12 have loads of bottom end and can run a little hot if not mated to th SXX speedo.

It's a Novak Motor with an SPX ESC

I thought going lower with the pinion would mean the motor has to do more work to travel the same distance, and that increasing the teeth on the motor would mean I wouldn't have to constantly be on full throttle out of corners to get the car going?

Small pinion means increased acceleration and lower top speed while larger means lower acceleration and higher top speed. Too large makes the motor not want to hit its maximum rpm either and you wont have a fast car anyway.
Too large pinion makes the motor hot and so does a too small one. 24t or 22 for that matter is too big on any tack I suspect. Novak works on high rpm so I would go with 18 or 19 tooth on most tracks.

Not sure it will help but I run a 6.5 on a 23 and an 8.5 on a 27 in the ZX5-FS. I use Speed Passion V3.0 motors and they are happy to pull those ratios without a problem.

That's super useful for me Roger, I've just bought an Atomic Carbon zx-5 to have a play with so will bear that in mind.
