Default What is the smoothest ESC for offroad?

I'm hoping that 2010 will be a much more RC packed year than 2009 and with that in mind I've been looking at my equipment trying to work out what to change for the better.

Currently I have a Sphere TC in the 4wd and a Nosram Matrix 07 in the 2wd.

I am not overly happy with the smoothness of either, even on the lowest settings they don't seem anywhere near as progresive as my old Nosram brushed speedos.

I am looking at backing down a couple of winds on the motors too (5.5 in 4wd, 6.5 in 2wd going to 7.5 / 8.5 respectively as that I think better equates to the 12/14 turn brushed motors I used to run).

What I would like to know is what speedos people are impressed by in terms of smoothness, especially from those people who have run several different brushless ESCs.

If anybody has any constructive comment regarding motor selection I'd like to hear those too.

What I am most interested in is smoothness and progresiveness as I am still very much struggling to adapt to the brushless set-ups I have.

I must say it was the Speed Passion range that had caught my eye!

Any more from anybody else?

Northy, tried the following all with the supplied rotors

Novak R & L
Orion
Nosram & LRP (bonded and sintered)
Speed Passion (which seemed the smoothest to be honest but it was a mild wind @ 8.5)

All still seem a little too agressive which is why I was asking about speedos first....

Aggressive where? Bottom end? If so, a smaller rotor will smooth bottom end out, and increase top end - win win imho

Rog,

A lot has to do with the rotors in brushless motors IMHO. What motors/rotors are you using?

I'd have to say the Orion Vortex Race Spec, although the manual is rubbish and there are limited setups built into the ESC unless you have the ICS usb adapter.

if your tekin isnt smooth, especially if your running a tekin redline motor aswell then its your settings that are wrong!! in sensored mode you can make it as smooth or as punchy as you like,,in dual mode ,like the men say,it makes mod motors very smooth with there power delivery, specially in offroad!!

i run tekin rs pros in all the classes i race in throughout the year, they are very specific in the way you can adjust there parameters to suit your driving style and ive found they work very well whether it be onroad or offroad

The Novak Kinetic is good. Big improvement over the older Novaks.

The Nova-link software makes it really easy to tune the speedo and to save speedo setting for future use.

I have now gone to HobbyWing escs, they make the Speed Passion stuff. The software is slightly different between the two though and I am REALLY impressed with the HobbyWing ExRun V2.1 & 1S style units. What makes them even better is that they can be had for about £100 for a 120A unit!

See my sig for link.
