Found this online this morning
DON'T leave the TV on standby - you will run up a small fortune. We have all heard this advice but how many of us know exactly how much it costs? Well, now there is no excuse for ignorance because I have teamed up with power company E.ON to find out. Together we have compiled this handy guide to the typical cost of household appliances. All costs are per hour except where stated. As you can see, an ordinary telly on standby uses 0.3p of electricty an hour. That adds up to 7.2p a day or £26.28 over a year. So cut out this guide and stick it somewhere all the family can see. TELEVISION Plasma TV 5p Plasma TV on standby 0.4p- £35.04pa Other TVs 2.5p Other TVs on standby 0.3p- £26.28pa how many have you got at home Set-top box 0.1p -£8.76pa KITCHEN Dishwasher 14p a load Electric cooker ring 30p Electric cooker oven 33p Gas cooker ring 9p Gas cooker oven 18p Microwave 1p for 5mins Kettle 2p a boil Toaster (two slices) 0.7p LIVING ROOM DVD player 0.1p £8.76pa Desktop computer 1p £87.60pa Laptop computer 0.25p Inkjet printer 0.4p Radio 0.1p CLEANING Iron 30p Washing machine 14p a load Tumble dryer 52p a cycle Vacuum cleaner 16p MISCELLANEOUS Traditional light bulb 1p Energy-saving lightbulb 0.15p Gas fire 23p Immersion heater 41p Digital camera charger 0.1p Mobile phone charger 0.02p MP3 charger 0.05p PlayStation 3 3p Xbox 360 2p Nintendo Wii 0.25p Wireless router 0.14p £12.26pa Hairdryer 27p Hair straighteners 1p BATHROOM Bath 10p a bath Shower 5p a shower

That's interesting, but the costs pa are a bit suspect.
If you take the tv on standby, it assumes you are leaving it on standby for 24 hours per day 365 days of the year! ![]()

You can't put exact values on like that, every device varies. I know my PC sucks more juice than my plasma

A list in scare tactics, that is.... some items require you to leave them on standby, like set top boxes, otherwise they don't get updates. New energy saving bulbs are costly, in lifespan and money, if you constantly swith them on and off, they are only efficient if left on and warmed up, constantly switching them on and off reduce their lifespan.
Next, they will be telling us, that when we don't have our heating on, we should turn our boilers off, turn off engines when stationary too, close all windows and doors if you got the heating on. Rather than keeping hitting us, maybe, if they offered you solar panels for your roof, and wind turbines, so you can take less from the National Grid, and during the day, when you are not home, put electricity back in to the grid....
