Default RC8E Conversion

Hi Chaps, Had a go on a Caster Elec 8th yesterday, was well impressed and its got me thinking about converting my RC8.

Got a few questions,

Is the AE conv kit the best one to go for? Doesn't seem too bad at £80?

Looking at ESC/Motors etc, this seems a good price for the CC stuff

Which KV rating would you go for?

I am looking to achieve a 20 min run btw.

Is there any other options worth looking at that dont cost the earth? I dont want to go mad on this as 10th is my main thang!

Default RC8E Conversion

Hi, may be a bit late, but here is my experience. I have an RC8 with Castle 2650Kv with MMM Esc, and is running nice with a 13T pinion (73 km/h). No problem keeping up with nitro guys. The MMM has broken, but you get a new one from Castle for $70. The motor is still going strong, run a lot since April. However, I have a new 2200Kv ready, and will use that one next season (with 16T or may be 17T). Have fun!

depends on how many lipo cells you wanna run... honestly i would recommend the 2200kv as that will keep your temps down and you'll still be able to smoke the nitros

Mark,

I have run a variety of different batteries, on different motors, and can suggest that at KMRC, a 5S 5500mAh is enough for about 21 minutes. This is on both 1700kV Tekin and a 1700kV Losi motor. If I were to use a 1400kV motor, and gear up a bit more (to acheive a slightly higher top speed than before), it is likely that I'll get a little more run time, with less tyre shredding acceleration out of the corners. As I'll use full throttle less, I'll conserve capacity. To get any run-time out of 1/8 electric, it is vital to be smooth on the throttle, it'll also make the car more driveable, as they are far more aggressive than nitro.

Obviously, you are probably a little smoother on the throttle, so could probably get away with a 5000 or 4500mAh pack.

I have actually decided to go the other way with my stuff for next season- have a very light car, with enough capacity for 10 minutes, then pit for a new battery. I just need to work on a fairly fast way of changing batteries. (I'm thinking velcro on body, no clips, a quick-release battery strap, and polarity-protected connectors, like EC-5s).

The total stop time shouldn't be more than two nitro pit stops (pretty much all nitros do two pit-stops in 20 minutes), and then, when electric takes off enough to have our own seperate class, we'll run 10 minute finals, and you won't have to buy new batteries to suit.

Thanks again for the advice Marv!

I am still toying with the idea of the elec 8th but I have got a 2wd Losi truck to have a play with so the 8th may have to happen next year.

I think the best bet is for me to drop my RC8 over and you do it for me!
