Hi all
Im a new memeber to this site having recently decided to get back into rc cars following a trip to Bury Metro Club with my Traxxas Slash. Realised quickly that i needed a buggy and ended up with a kyosho lazer which has a 6.5 turn - on a Venilon speeed controller. I run Asmann 4500MIh packs. My probelm is my pal has a losi and runs a 3.5t motor and lipos - so yes his car is quciker and that just wont do !!! So what do i get? Do i just go 11.1volt lipo? Or just go for an 7.4v lipo? How far do i go on the motor? why not just get a 2.5turn motor? Race night is this Friday at a club in Macclesfield so need to decide quickly and get my order in today !!! Any help really appreciated of course - i cant think i dont just get 11.1voly lipo with a 2.5turn motor ???? Thanks in advance if anyone replies James |

gear it right an learn how to beat him in the corners with less speed, and more control. not always the car with the fastest gear in it that wins

with a 3.5 in his he will be crashing constantly and probably break a lot as the car will be too fast for the track.
your set up is spot on, don't change it.

I know you are right pal - however very difficult to get over the deisre to just get the fastest stuff right away!!! Competition between us is fierce and although i havent driven really since i was 10 - well at least not raced since then i still have the deluded opinion that i will be able to control the car and just need more power !!! Plus it seems lipos are far more consistent and easy to deal with i.e. no dis-charging/cycling etc needed.... thanks anyway i will try to be sensible and logical...resist the call to the model shop !!! lol |

listen to the experienced guys! in offroad more speed is usually bad! your mate will barely get his car round the track in one piece. He may be quick down the straight, but he will be lucky to make the next turn!!
You will have even more bragging rights if you whoop him with a slower motor!!!

still cant get my head round something being too fast - but thats because i aint even raced the car yet - guess i will learn soon enough !!! suspense is killing me - cant wait to get to the track on friday night !!! lol guess i may see some of you there ? - macclesfield ? |

a 3.5 in an offroad buggy is insane. stick with your 6.5, and no need to change cells.
speed isn;t a factor in offroad. Grip is the big factor! the faster the motor, the more wheelspin!!

Your mates car is way to fast for off road, if you have a 6.5 brushless in you car that is about right if you go to lipo as will you will get more punch from the batteries. Speed is not everything. Stick with the 7.4 lipo maybe a high mah like 4600 but I run 3200 as it is all I need.

Losi + 3.5 + lipo = snapped

If you want to race at the club check that the rules don't limit you to 7.4v lipos, will your esc handle 11.1 volts anyway? The other thing to check before going to lipo is that your esc has a cutoff to stop it overdischarging the lipo.

3.5 Brushless!!! Only recommended if your track is a drag strip. If your track has corners, which I suspect it does, I wouldn't go anything higher than a 5.5.
How much time do the cars spend on their roof with the existing motors in.? I did the a similiar thing. Blamed getting beaten on slower motor. In reality, poorly set up car, inexperienced driving and ZX5 standard. Solution: - Got better at driving, upgraded the ZX5 to an SP, learnt more about set ups and asked for help, then put a Novak 5.5R in. EP4200 cells. Plenty quick enough. What type of track is it. Indoor, Outdoor. Type of surface. Where are you losing time, can't just be on the straight? And finally, 2 weeks ago, I got my ass handed to me by a 13.5 motor. The guy was just a better driver! ![]() |

Shocks worth getting over standard lazer ones ? |

if you have an original lazer the shocks are Ok. If you have a recent kit with the triple cap shocks then they are the best around. If you have the ready to run car with plastic shocks then maybe upgrade to the triple cap kyosho shocks, but not an essential upgrade. run the car first and see how you get on before spending loads.

Macclesfield is a very tight and twisty track, the straight is half as long as what an average off-road track has when you consider Worksop, Bury, York, Broxtowe, or pretty much any other circuit.
Granted, top speed of your friends buggy is going to be quicker. Get him on a circuit and it'll be thermalled in 3 minutes, and before it thermals it'll either broken or on its roof more than its wheels...... that motor is just far to quick. For Bury, your setup will be ideal. The leading cars at Bury are likely to be only using 6.5 motors or slower, especially with Lipo. For Macclesfield, what you have may also be too quick - you may need a 7.5 or 8.5!! Honestly, lap times come from doing clean consistent laps, and if you can't do that due to the speed then you need to be slower. Slower is faster ![]() |

Your car should be plenty quick with a 6.5. Check if your speedo has been properly calibrated. If you're still lacking horsepower, the cells are the ones to blame, get good ones or a lipo.
