can any 40mhz crystals work with this set or do they need to be ko.

KO/BB will work, I got four pairs years ago that were half the price of KO ones new but have no idea what brand they are but they work perfectly fine

i had some KO ones from BB but they would'nt work in the esprit 3, ok in type r and the older ones,?
