I think the KF has a fairly natural layout as the above example.
I actually shifted my speed controller as far to the left as possible, and then put the receiver on the right. It's much the same but counter balances the slight offset in motor position to get a more even weight distribution.

Its never easy to keep it clean looking, and the core RC receiver i have is massive!
