Most of the things are quite obvious to me, but what is the reason for the rear hubs? Any theories?

I remember this being a performance mod for the XX year ago, hinge pin used to nearly pass between the rear hub bearings. From memory, it stops the car swaying as much in quick direction changes on loose surfaces.... but I may be corrected on this.
