Default Excess rear shaft movement on x11 08

Just bought a used pred and noted an excess amount of up and down play the the centre shaft at the spur end. If you pull the spur up it actually touches the brace that goes from the mount to the front tower.
Spoke to Lewis who said there is play there,so I bought a new gear box case and have the same issue. I raced it Friday and stripped a spur gear but replaced it a after three hard races it is still ok so might point is how can this play be taken out or is it the norm.

I'd imagine Lewis thought you meant front to back play in the prop, which should be there.
However up and down play shouldn't really be there! An easy fix is to put a small drop of superglue onto the rear gearbox top where the bearing sits, let it dry and that will take up the excess slop. Another way I've seen it done is drilling a small hole through the gearbox top where a grub screw can be wound into clamping the bearing down.

Hope that helps!

Thumbs up

if you stripped a spur, could be you got the slipper to tight. also check you have the motor plate clamped solid, you only need to shift it a bit and youll strip it. if your hitting the motor clamp brace, you need to take a file to it and file it flat so you dont get the problem anymore.(this issue was mainly with the x10 as far as i know.

if your prop shaft is haveing a lot of play, you could try the bearing mod.
if you go www.the-pred.co.uk it should be on there.

hope this helps.

at the rear i use two bearing, and a little piece of double side adesive with soft compound... this is a best solution, and check all the 3 screws of the motor mount are tighted...

Right,
Found a solution to the issue. Even after two gearbox tops and a different chassis there is still play so I put it Down to poor tolerances.

Easy solution, cut a big bore cap seal in half and place one half in the cut out in the gearbox top. This is strong enough to prevent play but has enough give to allow the bearing to sit in the collar and to not cause friction by crushing the bearing. Plus is totally reusable when the rear diff needs a service.
