Got my generator back out of the shed for the outdoor season today, put in some fuel/2stroke mix as per norm and it took a while to get it going. I gave the spark plug a good cleaning with emery paper and tried again, it started right up but as soon as I plugged in my PS,charger+cells the revs drop off and comes close to cutting out, then it trips my charger out as it isnt giving enough amps.
I've tried a new spark plug to see if the other one is duff and alas the same problem occurs. Can any one give me some advice on what to do? |

Have you tried leaving it running for half hour or so without anything connected

Yeah it just carries on like it normally should, but as soon as power is being drawn it goes very sluggish then wont provide enough power for one charger!?

Could be a compression problem. Paul ,nothing has fallen onto the carb or anything has it

try adjusting the tick over screw to raise the engine speed or check the float chamber in the carb for dirt and clean the jets out with brake cleaner or motor cleaner

Did you empty the old fuel out from last year? That might of "gone off" and could be blocking the fuel pipes up ?
Im an expert haha. ![]()

how does low compression let an engine run at idle but not rev up? lol moving on, by the way how many car owners drain thier tanks when the car is stood???

Paul
can you see the bit on the carb like a throttle linkage? sounds to me like the govenor/linkage may be sticking if the revs are not picking up, if you can see the linkage manually pick the revs up a bit, dont go silly though! hard to be much more help with out seeing it as philc has said main jet could be blocked as suggested, but thats inside the carb normally, try not to adjust the mixture screw, if you do count how many turns it takes to wind then in untill they stop, then when you refit them put them in all the way and back out to your recorded amount of turns could just be residual of 2 stroke oil in there and it may wash out after a while

I'll give the carb a going over when I can this week, i've tried a few different things today, cleaning what i can and poking around but nothing seems to have helped.
Would 2 stroke residue cause this problem? I'll be honest in saying I did leave fuel in there over winter about 1/4 of a tank. I used this left over to let the genny idle for a while to warm up, then put a fresh mix in to give it a testing, normal 'mix' of 2 stroke/fuel and still no joy. Thanks for the offer too G ![]() |

I have had fuel go off in an old motorbike left standing over winter, fresh fuel and way you go....
Sounds more like it is gummed up somewhere though....

joking aside mark, the reason i said compression is when paul was saying it was ok until he put it under load. Wouldn't putting it under load mean the pressure goes up causing a leak through say a gasket

no the compression is same weather the engine is under load or not, same displacment of air is drawn in and compressed on one compression stroke more fuel (thottle) gives a bigger bang and more heat/pressure, if a head gasket is gone it will blow on idle or load, most probably a steel gasket any how and air cooled 2 stokes dont tend to over heat or blow em
as dcm somin is blocked or gummed up by old fuel oil mixture would fit

If it is one of the cheep ones that come in blue or yellow I had the same problem I cleaned the air filter and noticed the rubber seal on the cover to the filter was not sat right sorted that seems alright now.
