the only way they would do that is if
1/ the speedo had a dead short 2/ the user used them below the 6 volt cut off thery could swell 3/ over charged nimh would do damage if speedo was faulty, as its not a cell fault in either case

Unlikely. Low voltages cause performance/life issues in Lithium Polymer rather than safety issues. It is overcharge or over current that cause safety issues. If an ESC went dead short then this could cause a fire.

baisicly if a spedo cought fire and it was next to the battery in the car would the burning speedo ignite the battery ?

yes it can in extreeme circumstances
[FONT='Verdana','sans-serif']EXTERNAL THERMAL DAMAGE – LiPo cells will get damaged by external heat. Most manufacturers recommend keeping the cells under 60 deg C or 176 deg F. In my experience, a cell will start to balloon up and the layers start to delaminate once the temperature rises above 90 deg C (194 deg F). If the temperature is extremely severe – the cell will go into thermal runaway and you will have a flaming mess. The thermal volatility is directly related to the cell chemistry. [/FONT]

It wouldn't do Nimh's any good either being roasted by a flaming speedo going supernova. Both scenarios are bad but highly unlikely and not really reason enough to not buy a lipo... (in my opinion at least...) |
