Default Thinking about getting back int RC, DEX410R advice

Hi, been lurking in the forum for a while now. I was in to RC cars around 1987, yes a long time ago!

I used to race a Schumacher PRO CAT twice a week for around 3 years. And looking at youtube A LOT has changed.

Im thinking of getting back into the sport and have a few questions.

I have seen a Durango DEX410R for £190 would this be a good investment to get back into the sport with? I enjoy setup and modification as much as using the car.

Would I need to use brushless and lipos to get the best from this car?

Are there any other kits I should be looking at around the £200 mark. Most racing will take part on wooden floor with some carpet area.

Hi, just come back to racing after a long time out also, longer than I care to remember

It's taken a while to get my head around things as the main thing that has changed are the electrics. Most if not all people tend to run brushless now but it is taking a bit of adjusting to.

In the good old days my biggest problem was trying to get to the end of a race without dumping as it was called now thing are totally different lipos will easily last a couple of races if you really wanted to, so running out of power is no longer an issue.

Someone else may be able to advise on the Dex410R, I run the 210 and am really happy with it, so happy I ordered the v3. Durango seem like they have raised the bar with their cars so don't think you wouldnt go far wrong. MB Models have the R for £175 Bargain

The Durango is a great car straight out of the box in my opinion you don't really need to modify it i'd say get the front alloy hinge pin holder and thats about it

And yes nowadays brushless / lipos is the easyest and probably cheapest way to race

What is the 210 like?, what surfaces do you race on? Back in the day my memory of 2wd on wooden floor was not so good.

Really like the car, ran b4 at Worksop before i got the 210 and was like night and day handling wise. I used to race 4wd but change to 2wd as I liked the challenge, polished floors were at most tracks. Only place I have run polished floor with the 210 is York but its not wood I don't think and Batley, car handles really well but is harder to control. Few other clubs have cork and rubberised surface which have loads of grip. If you want something easier to drive then go 4wd, they were always more fun to drive than 2wd. And if you got the R it's cheaper than a 210.

Thanks for the advice, I have gone the DEX410R route from MB Models.

Can someone point me in the right direction with electrics, as this is the biggest change since i last raced.

I will be going lipo and brushless with this set up, but just need to understand it a bit more.

When i raced my sce's and scr's were the weak link in the car, if you were not geared correct. You would not get to the end of your 5 min race.

What sort of run time would you expect from lipos and what on average is the charge time?

You can easy run past 20 minutes with a fast motor if you wanted everything toasty, charge time is less than an hour, In fact if you are doing 5 minute races most slap the battery on charge after a race, 30/40 minutes later its full charged and ready to go, run all day on one battery no problems, as the last bit of charging is low amps you can pull them off charge 90% and not notice the difference. Yesterday we were running 2 heats on one charge. (charge at 1C, so 5000AmpHour at 5amps takes an hour, but you never fully discharge lipo, just topping up, a 'balance charge' takes slightly longer, not necessary every time).

Problem now is the cars have to much power, its all about setup and driving, you don't have to wonder if the other cars have 'better matched magic whatever' batteries, we all have shed loads of speed and power if needed, just have to keep it on the track.

Check threads on looking after lipo's, not difficult but different. And expect a 2012 approved BRCA lipo list soon.
