Default Glazed slipper pads

Would I be right in thinking that the material that slipper pads are made of will not be effective it it has a "glazed" appearance.

And would rubbing the pad surface down with some fine sandpaper be good practice to get some more life out of it?

Referring to a Tamiya Durga by the way although the pads seem to be a similar friction material to other cars I have used in the past.

yes and yes

just don't go mad with the sandpaper - just eradicate the glaze without taking too much of the overall thickness.

you can also just flip 'em over - both sides should not be glazed....

Well that is good news then because that is exactly what I did about 5 seconds after posting the original question - now I know I don't need to take the damn transmission apart again!
