I use the right polycarbonate paint, i scuff the inside of the shell and wash it out thoroughly but i still get flaking and peeling all be it minor but its still annoying having to go back and re touch after a race meet, am i just laying the paint down to thick or to many coats? any advice welcome

I've been using custom colourz spray paint, the last shell i did with them came out fine no problems but this time i've had some flaking i always put the tins on the radiator to warm them and shake them thoroughly, the only thing notably different when i sprayed this time was the outside temp. it was mild as apposed to warm but probably only degrees. By backing how do you mean i usually finish with a complete coat of white then mask the inside of the shell to protect it from the inside.

If the shell has been properly prepped and the right paint used, I would hazard a guess it's been applied in too heavy coats, easy to do with rattle cans.
Anytime I'm using cans, try and 'dust' the first coat and build up slowly from there. When backing, don't go mad either. I've seen temp make a difference, but only in extremes. I do often pre warm a shell, but it's habit, without actually knowing if it makes a big difference. Hope that helps.

Yeh cheers, thats probably another thing i didn't do this time i didn't set the shell on the radiator between coats, as i painted this time over several nights i was in no hurry to get the paint on and get it dry.

+1 on what gingapaint said.
I would definately suggest applying the paint in much lighter coats, heat dry between coats with either heat gun or hair dryer (i use the hair dryer). Also I dont find the need to back the rattle cans with anything other than the white thats used to brighten the colours. Also make sure you've got a few days dry time before racing to make sure the paints cured.. good luck |
