nikon D50 or D70

im in the market for a new camera and realy like the D70 but the price of he
D50 is more appealing.


so can i ask you all for some advice on which to choose

I've never used a d50 in anger, its essentially the same as a d70 but slightly smaller and with just the one dial on it for adjusting things. It's still a very capable camera.

Understood from a recent test here in a German photo magazine, that the D70 is above the D50 featurewise, only on par in terms of picture quality (here and there they better each other) and inferior on connectivity, as the D70 only features USB 1.1....oh oh...

I'm in the same situation, but wait for the Photokina in Cologn/Germany to pass in autumn to wait for new stuff to come out....

thanks guys i think i will go for the D70 because im after a camera to last me a long time and im a gadget freak so more features will be top of the order

Just be aware there is a D70 and D70s. The difference is a different colored menu, but an increased monitor from 1,8 to 2 inches diagonal. Unfortunately, both have that lame USB 1.1 connection fot data download.

I was hoping that due to the new Sony 100 SLR 10MP camera the Nikon D200 would get under substantial price pressure sucking down all other models as well....

So, waiting another 3 month til the Photokina could be wise.....may be not all...

My original D70 has the new menus, its just a software upgrade, no biggie. The bigger screen is always nice so you can see if your photos are any good though.

My d70 is my backup / short lens camera (how posh) but might make a return to being my only camera in a month or so. I really like it.

If you are buying new, don't worry about the D70/D70S thing... you shouldn't be able to buy a D70 anywhere, as it was upgraded to S specs some time ago.

Fantastic camera. I love mine... just wish that 18-200 VR lens weren't so damn expensive and difficult to get. If I had the chance to buy over again, I'd buy the body alone, forego the stock 18-70 DX lens than many kits are sold with and throw any and all cash at the 18-200 "do-it-all" lens. Everything I have seen, read and heard says it's the only lens most of us will ever need.

That 18-200 lens would also be my idea (cheap Sigma), as you save the changing of the lenses vs. dirt (no dirt shaker in the Nikon like in the Olympus E-500)....and as we all love off-road places...you never know

On the other hand, the 18-200mm sucker easily sets you back 300 Euro + the D50 or D70 or a "rumored" D80 or D90 (8MP)....oh wow, wonder if I really dare to throw ca. 800 Euro over my shoulders...if there would not be the trip planned to India next year...where a new camera would really make so much sence...

Nikon, as I understood it, prefered to offer a 18-55 and 55-200....so the 18-200 Sigma probably won't kick it at both ends....well, 300 Euro is in the world of optics not that much money I have to admit ...

well after looking at all avaliable i decided to get a D70s ( i didnt think i would benefit by having the new D80)

i must say what a piece of kit im realy looking forward to getting trackside with it

one question for you guys do you have any settings that you would recomend as a good staring point

any advice is welcome as im new to digi slr

Hi mate, I use the following settings


White balance cloudy (for outdoors no matter the weather)
colour mode IIIa (srgb)
saturation Enhanced

Usually use the camera in Aperture priority mode
