Mtroniks rv12 no brake/instant reverse issue

Hey guys I have just bought the esc in the post title for my mad monkey, it's the sniper assault version. When I put it in 'race mode' I get forward and brakes, works a charm.

When I put it in 'reverse mode', it seems to lose the brakes bit and will just go instantly from forward to reverse. This doesn't seem right as I assume it's putting a lot of stress on the motor and doesn't brake properly. On my slash I get brakes, then I have to repress the throttle to get reverse.
I'm wondering if I've configured something wrong with the esc or the radio, or if there is something faulty, or if it's meant to be like that?
