Default ESSENTIAL ITEM? - lipo ready servos

Hi guys,

Im having trouble finding enough info about this.

Savox have jsut brought out their new range of "lipo ready" servos (the SC1268MG) but I am confused as to the necessity of these.

Do we really need to be worried about using non-lipo servos in our cars?
I dont know a huge amount about electronics, but surely the jump from 7.2v NiXX to 7.4V Lipo isnt enough to seriously damage the servo?

Savox claim that with these new servos, you no longer need a "voltage regulator" between your reciever and servo but I have not seen anyone use one of these anyways.

Your thoughts and opinions would be, as always, greatly appreciated.

(And a chocolate coated Easter bunny for the best reply!!)

Andrew

They are aimed at nitro as in nitro you have to run a battery pack to power the servos. People want to use lipos in their nitros as they last longer.

Don't use them in an electric car as you only have 6v to power them servos.

Ahhhhh ok, that makes sense.
Thanks so much Whiskers.

Im running 1/10th electric OffRoad so dont think I need to worry about them then.

One final question - you mention 6v. So does the ESC also have a voltage regulator built into it, transforming the 7.4v batt voltage into 6v for the servos?
...just seems strange as all the servos specifications when you buy them are rated at 7.2V (eg. Torque = 12kg/cm @ 7.2V)

(...a bunny being dip-coated as we speak Whiskers.)

Yep the speedos give you a constant 6v. well mine is 6.5v but you get the idea. My savox servos were rated at 6v (eg. 0.09s @6v, 9gm/cm @6v)

The output voltage to the servos from the esc is regulated and is usually around 6v. On some esc's it is adjustable (mamba max pro for example). It is most important to check that any servo you buy is suitable for the output voltage of the esc. Many servos give speed and torque at different input voltages, Usually 6v and 7.2v.

Thanks pugboy, I'll definately do that as I am right now looking for a high-torque servo (something like a Spektrum or a Savox looks nice)

Thanks again for the input.

P.S. love the signature. At 34 I can definately say Amen to that brother!

Currently, the way I'd go for servos is:

Low profile - Savox 1251
Regular size - the GM 80x range from Schumacher - great specs and UK support for less than the Savox regular size servos, just over £40 in fact. Note their stated speed is over a 40 degree rather than 60 degree arc, so multiple by 1.5 to compare with other servos.
