Default Transponder Help - Buying guide

Hi All,

Transponder help please!.

I am do to start racing soon and I have been told I need my own transponder. Due to race at present at Taplow and TORCH.

1: Yesteryear we used to pin a transponder onto the rear wing. Are these still about now?.

2: Do you get need different transponders for each different club/track?

3: Any suggested links to resellers of these or the manufacturers?

All great wonderfully received!

Cheers

Default transponder help

hi neil
after all those years things have changed alot, but the transponder is really easy now,
the main thing is the personal transponder, these are very small and powered by the receiver, and are normally stuck to the chassis or on top of the servo etc. they have a number that is unique to the transponder so that the race software will only pick that transponder to you, also when you go to other meetings all you have to do is book in with your number and thats it
there are two main types the AMB and the MRT transponders, AMB is about £70 new and the MRT about £45 new, if you are lucky you may be able to pick them up second hand.
hope this explains well enough
we sell the MRT type from the shop

Default PTs

Some clubs still have handout transponders but as they are very expensive to buy and keep going most newer clubs just supply the timing setup and you have your own PT (personal transponder) MRT are about the cheapest to buy at around £50.00 they come with a unique no. which you tell your club then any car you run with the PT in will be counted. Hope this helps. Ash

Hi Neil.

Most clubs do offer handout transponders that are used on the day, they are pinned to a part of the car (such as the wing).

Personal transponders are the biggest thing out there, once you have your transponder, that's it. You keep it no matter what track you go to. It has its own unique number. There are a few on the market and here's a quick rundown:

AMBrc - These are the most commonly used at the moment, currently not available from new as they've been replaced (see below) but many do pop up for sale as second hand.

Mylaps RC - This is the new version of the AMB transponder, it's much smaller and can be purchased from www.bbksoftware.com. Clone transponders are available if you have more than one model, that way you can have them installed in as many models as you like with the same main number.

MRT - I use these myself. Very small design like the mylaps transponder and a few options available when purchasing such as case style, led colour, lead length... MRT own a certain number of "official" AMB transponders and they install 20 numbers onto each MRT PT. The chances of you conflicting with another MRt at the same race who has the same number is a slim chance but you can simply change the number at the press of a button to have your own number. These are the cheapest option too. See www.team-mrt.com

Hope that helps.

Hi Neil,

At TORCH we have a v small number x5 of handout transponders, but PTs are def the future> However I also understand that racing is v expensive and the PT is often last on the list for some people.

I have an AMBrc in my 4WD and a clone MRT in the 2WD. Two cars with the same PT number

Not quite true. All the numbers on MRT transponders are clones of existing AMB ones. MRT pre-load the numbers of 20 AMB transponders onto their clones, and they keep the originals in-house, so you won't have a clash at the track - just switch to a different pre-loaded number if you have to.

MRT also supply clones of your own AMB transponder number if you send it in to them.

This all works out when they are new, a small problem is that some people will sell on their original AMB transponder seperately from their MRT clones, so you can end up with several transponders with the same "unique" number in circulation. Of course, since the MRT transponders also have 20 other numbers, clashes are still unlikely.

AMB have stopped doing club transponders (the chunky ones you pin to your car), basically AMB is forcing everyone to buy a PT from now on . Fine for established racers, an avoidable expense for newcomers.
