Default How to connect lipo to esc! Help

dumb question but im new to this so better to ask

i have a bionic hardcase lipo with 2 small holes in for what look like banana plugs and an esc with red and black wires that lead into what i think is a male tamiya type connector. what leads do i need to connect the two and where can i get them?

im thinking there must be a lead that has a female tamiya type connector on one end and then two individual banana style plugs to go direct to battery?

Normally we would replace the Tamiya connector with some 4mm male "corally" plugs, like these - http://www.rcracinguk.com/index.php?...oducts_id=1733 (widely available from various manufacturers). The Tamiya connector can't handle very high currents and often melts.

But, if you don't want to do the soldering job, you can buy adaptors like these - http://www.hpieurope.com/piw.php?lang=en&partNo=101961

thanks

actually i fancy the soldering challenge so how does this sound

get some 14 gauge red and black - terminate one end with the 4mm corally style plugs to go into the lipo and then terminate the other end with female deans

then for the esc remove existing tamiya connector and replace with male deans?

will 14 gauge be sufficient? at some point i will replace the existing m tronics and trinity brushed set-up with a brushless motor and esc so wondering if with a newer brushless esc i would need a different gauge wire for the lipo to esc run?

Why put an extra connector in there? Just solder corallies onto the ESC. 14AWG is fine.

it looks like the wires into the esc are bodged into their holes there is some black resin in there but ill have a closer look tonight - if all clear ill do as you suggest - so that's corally style into both the lipo and the esc right?

What most people do is remove the tamiya connector and solder the corrally (banana plug) connectors in it's place.
Would your esc wires be long enough for that?

Saves you buying any more wire and keeps connections to a minimum.
What ESC do you have?

i think they might be!

esc is an old mtronics eco 27 so want an interim solution that works safely with the lipo before getting the new esc and motor

do you suggest that i remove the tamiya connector and replace with female corally and then another run for the lipo pack that has female corally for the lipo end and male for esc end

Default leads

the lead in the first reply looks a good one to plug into your battery but i would cut off the tamiya plugs and fit some of these as the current drawn would better suit these plugs than the tamiya ones,

everybody uses these, (everyone i know in the 3 clubs i goto anyway)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5-Pairs-Gold-P...2#ht_918wt_935

and as you said your a newbee i gotta add the plugs with only one set of metal connectors pertruding from the red sheilding go on your battery and the ones with 2 sets of connectors petruding go onto your speed controller,

positive wire (red) goes to the square (biggest) connector on the plugs

actually now i see what you are saying - a single clear run from the esc straight to lipo with the corallies going straight into lipo - not sure that the lead is long enough will check though

Default help with soldering corally's..

I was really struggling on soldering corally's until a genius pm'd me the folllowing:

easy way to solder

1. make sure iron is "big enough" ie heat is not lost through tip when in contact with connector i use a 60watt mains jobbie usually

2. drill 4mm hole in small lump of wood (to hold connector (male ) slightly larger for female !

3. put connector in wood apply tip of iron to SIDE of connector feed solder into "bucket" (cupped end) until melting

4. make sure wire is tinned (covered in solder)

5 reapply tip of iron to side of connector again to remelt solder in bucket feed wire end into molten solder remove iron should solidify in few seconds

Works a treat!

Have fun.

superb thanks for that especially given that my recent attempts to solder on other stuff has been pants!

That's it, most efficient way forward. You can get connectors with the option to have the wire going in from the side rather than the top which may be a better fit.
But those mtroniks do capture the wire so there's no nice way to fit new longer wires, you would have to extend the existing wires otherwise.

ok all so based on the information here and what ive seen on the thread below my modus will be to minimise any connections where possible and to use single runs where possible. any connections to be made using corrallies

thanks for the advice!
