Hello the micro scene!
I'm awaiting delivery of a Lrp shark, as southport radio car club are going to be running them indoors this winter I'm interested to give it a go! The car Seems to have quite a few upgrades, aluminium towers, shocks, front top plate, carbon fibre servo strap and I think it's a carbon battery strap. I'm going to assume it has ball doffs as the seller races mainly micro but I'll double check when it's here. Along with the clubs series I may look to do two of the more northern nationals if I can, or at least attend ellesmere/Chester. I'd like to get the going going well, but not have to pay stupidly high prices. The club has made it clear we need to run hard case lipos and there's no flex in that, what batteries can I get, and how many will I need to get me through meetings? Do people run brushless combos on the micro scene? If so what should I be after? And what rated motor should I aim for that will have enough speed and controllability? Going to need a servo to get it around a corner, again advice on this is helpful! Last of all - wheels and tyres! What am I going to need here? Is the wear rate good/bad with micros? I know there's alot of questions, but best to get the right advice before I buy blindly! |

hey paul, glad to have you in the micro fold! first up, motors, we pretty much all use brushless now. the only sensored motor is the novak 380 (10.5 or 13.5t is the best choice here) and you can use any 10th speedo or the mongoose to run this. The tekin rs is pretty popular. sensorless, the choices are huge, for bang for buck go for the ezrun combos, but the caslte mamba systems are pretty awesome. any thing from 5400kv -68ookv will be good here servo wise, go for the ino-lab servo, its the hg-d261, an absolute belter and just doesn't break wheels and tyres, tc wheels 24mm all round, rubber tyres are the way forward if your running at the nats, schumacher rally blocks or pins. yellow compound lasts longer with the wear frate on the whites being pretty sever on some tracks. Hard case lipos are a tricky one, only lrp, vampire and intellect options as far as i can see, one should be fine for a nights racing, two to be safe. hope that helps mate

Helped alot thanks! Are the sensorless systems good to use for competition? They seem cheaper and as you say a wider range is available!
Question re the lipos.. Can I charge them using my trakpower charger? Are we talking 1-2 meetings per change of tyres in the yellow compound or will they go further? Local club will be 100% carpet plus jumps. Really appreciate the help! |

i ran a tekin sensorless and it was fine for club stuff but did tend to cog once or twice per race. Only really caused a problem if it cogged on the run up to a big jump as you couldn;t get consistant accelation each lap.
Don;t get a mongoose speedo, i've lost count of the number i've seen go pop for no reason. Just stick a cheap 10th speedo in, i had an old nosram matrix, worked fine. the novak 10.5 is the way forward. the 8.5 is silly fast, and on some bigger tracks the 13.5 may be a little lacking. servo's, don;t run the hitec, i had that and it was aweful, wouldn;t centre, didn't have enough torque etc. I ended up putting an old 10th servo in it as they do fit with the lugs off. The Ino-lab servo is good but a bit pricey. If you're club track is carpet then a set of foams should be fine. 35 shore LRP/Nosram will be fine and probably last a bit longer than pins. The rubbers are only really an advantage on multi surface tracks with polished sections. But they do give slightly better air control on big jumps.

I've got the EZ run 12T combo in my RC18 and it's ace, no cogging (unless you forget to turn reverse off!) you should get a few meetings out of the tyres, we've someone who's run 6 months at club on a set! (yellow rallyblocks) |

Rothers, practise with Rubbers if you are going to do a Round of the National Series as no Foams are allowed
Get yourself down to Ellesmere Port one Friday night and we'll sort you out with anything you need and get booked in for the Micro National asap ![]() |

I finished 2nd at the 2010 MicroX with the Castle sensorless micro pro system. I continue to run it and it will be in my car for the nationals. The CM20 motors are a bit small, but the CM26's are novak sized and perfect for the job. To be honest I can't fault the system for adjustability, ease of use and price.
Matisse's first reply encompasses everything really - I don't have anything else to add, other than that a standard 10th tc servo might be better for the job - you'll have to cut the lugs off it to fit it in though... |

Thank you all for the advice!
I'm getting my hands on the car tomorrow (missed the postie being away today!) I've picked up an Ezrun system with 5400kv motor for a nice price, and i'm just scouring around for some batteries to use! I've got a spare servo that I keep for my buggy, may use that, or find a cheap alternative - if they fit ill be better off! Will hopefully get over to a micro meet as soon as it all comes together! |

Went to ellesmere port today and ran my shark, received it from the mail and wired it up 20 mins before the first round.
Worked out the niggles I had in the steering and the car was fantastic, really fun to race, and the jumps ellesmere put out were good! Car lacked abit of bottom end grunt, however had to gear it on a 12 tooth pinion on a 18t/5200kv motor as that's all I had, should I gear lower or would it to be with the ez run set up card? Car was coming off fine, cooling down after marshalling to the point I was able to touch it. |
