I don't know much about these so looking for recomendations.

LRP Pulsar3 does everything as well as LiPo.

I'm happy with my Pro-Trak for general charging, I just need a cheap and cheerful lipo charger. Or do I just need an inline balancer thing-a-ma-jig?

you can balance a LiPo while charging, or you can balance a LiPo as you would equalise your Nmhi's before a charge.

no performance gain either way from what I understand, its just done to keep them as safe as possible.

charging a LiPo is where things can go wrong, can you be 'happy' with a cheep and cheerful LiPo charger?

You need the ROM changing for a lipo one

have your lipos if you have any got a balance lead on as well as the + & - leads?

I have flightpower lipo's and had to get the 1 in the above link because flightpower use their own brand balance plugs

I believe other lipo's use a more common balance plug so just about any other balancer should be OK

I have an Orion carbon Lipo and am looking at getting whatever one will fit in my spare tranny that I will never use at a BRCA meeting

So which balancer thing a-ma-jig do I need?

the Trakpower balancer will do it, then yuo can buy an adapter lead for other packs.

its not a necesity tho, wack it on jimmys ( he has track power) now and then to keep it in check

Look at the FMA Cellpro 4S, it is a near bulletproof Li charger / balancer and not too expensive either:
