Default how hot should a motor get?

hey guys.

been out of the electric scene for a hilse and jsut got a pred x10. picked up an old mark reinhard brushed 10x1 motor and running it on my nosram matrix evolution tc esc. just a question regards to the motor how hot should it get??

it got hot enough earlyer for one of the soldered wires to come loose and fall off (its 14 gauge wire, should i be using a thicker wire ie 12gauge?)

it jsut seems nippy but not mega fast (handles like a dream though!) comm looks reasonable onthe motor and its running stock timing. esc seems to get semi warm but no where near as hot as the motor (running 72 spur and 2 pinion)

will go brushless at some point as the esc allows it, any ideas what sensored brushless motor will suit the car more (i run mainly on long wide damp clay tracks)

cheers
