Default Pre-installed Windows help

Reet, my father's HP computer has been struck down with a virus, of his own fault (clicking on a dodgy link, and now at 78 years old, he is getting very rude sites coming up, at my amusement).

What are my options?? Currently I have run AVG in safe mode, and it is still infected.

The Virus is the one that tells you your infected, and by running it, infects more. I am not sure if running the factory reset function, to bring you back to a clean install will work (boot sector infection maybe?).

Can Sanitise the hard drive, as will lose the Hidden Partition.

Help please guys.

HiJack this should clean that out as well. Go a log and run it through an online log analyzer.

Failing that, might be time for a reinstall.

already been through the process, but if I remember rightly, this program attatches itself etc...

re-instal, great, but if the virus is logged in the dead space on the hard drive, it is can still be active after a re-install... been there.

Is this the "Internet Security 2010" type virus, where by that keeps trying to run and is generally a proper PITA?

If so, then I did a re-install to fix someone's else's once.

You should be able to make recovery disks if that's any help - I did with my HP laptop.
