Default X11 steering slop

Recently bought an x11 08 2nd hand, only had 1 run out with so not had much time to tinker with it. Anyhow, been having a look at the steering as thought the servo horn ball was loose, however it seems to be the car that has the slop. Appears to be at the main pivots at the cross brace, is this normal or is there an obvious part that wears?

Also been looking at the orange steering upgrade and wondering if this is worth the £40 odd quid?

There should be some movement but less than a millimetre from side to side at most. Have a look at the bearings in the ackerman link as one of them may of failed if a severe knock has happened.

The orange parts transform the steering and give a lot more turn in, I haven't used the original blue parts since I bought them. As far as I know they are only for stick pack converted cars but you could countersink the other side and flip them to use saddle packs.

Bearings seem to be OK, more like the pin has worn in them although there is no obvious sign of wear on th pin. Also cross brace is new so can't be that so might change all the ball joints and bearings etc as a start point and see if that helps.

Shame as I'm running saddles and not sure I want to shell out nearly £50 for something I'm going to have to doctor to get to work!

it isn't a lot of work .
you can change the saddel to stick and change the steering as well in about 1 hour work on the car and its well worth dooing .
It makes the car fun for driving.

i had the same problem with mine, it was that bad it made it hard work to get down the straight. i've put a shim between the lower bearing, and the steering link, which takes out all the slop, around 0.3mm on my car. however you must make sure that it's only the same diameter as the inner race of the bearing, which meant i had to dremel down the outside diameter of the shim to make sure it won't bind the bearings up

Don't really fancy converting it to stick packs at the moment but might at some point if I need more steering.

Cheers for that I'll try putting some shims in and see if it helps. Looking at it it could well be slack at that point on the sterring bar so could well be the problem.

Seem to have resolved the steering slop issue, however I
now seem to have very little lock, especially left. Does anyone have any tips for improving turn in without upgrading to the orange steering?

also put a drop of super glue around the bearings where they go into the steering link,
takes up the free play
