While replacing the plastic outdrives on the front and rear diffs of the zx-5 I've had to rebuild them.
Having only raced once since june last year, and not at all since I've modified the car, I've no idea if I have the diffs setup correctly or not. It's going to be a couple of weeks before I can get to a local meet and get someone to help me, so in the meantime I thought I'd ask on here. I've tried following advice previously but I'm still not 100% certain. First, if I hold the car in the air, and turn any on of the wheels, all of the wheels turn in the same direction, which I'm presuming the diffs are tight (too tight?). I tried playing around with it all last night, I set the diffs as per the manual so they were tight, but smooth. When I put everything back together and tried the car out, something was slipping, I tightened the spur, and there was still slipping. I decided at that point the diffs were not tight enough. After more messing around, I have the diffs pretty tight now, and setup so that the spur slips before the diffs do. The end result is that the car feels very torqy when you pull away, i.e. the spur doesn't slip very much. I have this feeling now that the diffs are far to tight, and upon the first race I'm going to completely knack the bearings! So. this is what happens; If I hold the car in the air and turn one wheel, they all turn in the same direction. If I hold the two front wheels, and turn one of the rear wheels, the other rear wheel turns in the opposite direction. The same happens when I do the same to the front. I've just done a test holding the two front wheels and one rear, while turning the other wheel, and even with the slipper completely loose, the diff slips before the splipper! arrggh, I had it slipping last night! Why would the diff slip when it's a tight as a nuns you know what? |

I've just figured out, I should only be holding the spur and the opposite wheel, No wonder the diffs were slipping!
I think I've got it all sorted now. I've rebuilt them all so they're nice and smooth, the slipper goes before the diff, and there isn't much slipper going on when you set off. |
