Default Power supplies

This has most likely been talked about else where on this forum and others, but what power supply does anyone recommend and amp rating?

Mainly use it at home straight from the mains, to save me bringing in a 12v from the garage. Obviously to power my charger, discharger and a soldering iron.

Thanks,

Jonathan, I use the muchmore 24amp worlds edition power supply, and its ace, however there are many out there and a wide variety of prices to suite all budgets. There are some good ones by pro peak.

As with everything you pays your money you takes your chance.

i bought the pro peak one two days and it powering all my stuff great and improves my 12v soldering irons performance hugely. Early days yet though but was much cheaper than the others listed in the shop. Using the mains power is a novelty for me at the moment so ive been searching for things to solder and been cycling my batteries

Jonathan, We've been using the earlier, single outlet, Pro Peak for some time now and never had a problem with it. We plug a Much More 5 outlet jobby into it and use it to power everything from dischargers & equalisers to chargers, can't fault it.

i use the lrp 14 amp one and have done for over a year now. really cant fault it, ok it was more money than the pro peak one but when i went out to the euros it had all the correct leads with it and still gave me enough juice all week long without thermaling or any thing so can really recomend it

i got the muchmore 24amp one, its looks great and does its job,

but is only an average power supply. voltage is not stable at the preset level when you apply a load through it.

when u compare the weight of it (3/4kg) to other power supplies at 25amps which weigh 3kg, you prob understand why.

I use a converted PC power supply. You get a 3.3V output for the lathe too.

i'm hoping to go down the PC power supply route.
What spec or model are people using for this?

Whatever's cheapest, easiest to hand. Really doesn't need to be anything fancy unless you want to run loads of stuff. A mate owed me a favour so I have a gaming one that suppossed to do 30A@12v, trouble is it dips in voltage a bit with several chargers on it. I used to use one from an old Pentium 1 until it died, that did 5A no worries

400 - 450W would be good and should last forever...... They're about £15 from the right places

main thing to remember is you must load up the 3.3 and 5v rails for it stablise the 12v rail.

ive got one of the 30amp 12v ones too and the voltage is stable at just over 12v with a 25 amp load on it.

i have an old pentium 2 at home which i was going to butcher. Think the supply had 135w continuous or something on it which i thought was pretty low compared to the modern 400w jobs.
vaguely remember from the racechat thread about the Amps being the watts/volts which would make it give about 10-11A at 12v which would be enough for one charger, possibly 2 at 5a charge.

does that sound right to anyone with a bit of electrics knowledge?!!
ta

or can someone point me in the direction of a cheap 300w+ supply?
