I have owned a acoms 2.4ghz and there ok but not really upto racing spec in my opinon, you get what you pay for, some lads at Bury race track use them but if you have the cash go for a spectrum or sanwa system well worth the money.
I haven`t looked back since i upgraded radio gear

I have used one of these. Its what you pay for really. If you want a all singing all dancing radio set, buy a spektrum, i bought an DX3s off her for a £100 with all tele and 2rx's. Je spares have an offer on DX3 £114.99 its a bit more then the acoms but i think your mainly paying for quality. Even better idea buy a second hand one. Seen a spektrum dx3 floating around in the for sale section for £70

Tell us what you buy mate.

Issue with the DX3s is that its £114 and no servos - the acoms is £70 all in. Same with the Ansman/Sanwa. I am just setting up again after years out and trying to balance the books - seems it might be better to "compromise" on the radio rather than the car/batts/charger etc. As long as it "works" what makes one 2.4gz radio "better" than another (naive question alert!!)? Will have a look at 2nd hand etc.

Cheers for assitance.

The DX3 comes with 2 servos and receivers for £114 for Jespares. There's normally a link/ad at the top of the page.

I have the Acoms and it works. Its not great, but it works. Works well enough that I retired my very old KO Esprit for it in fact.

But the small black boxes that come with it really shouldn't be called servos. I never even fitted mine until I sold an old car on Ebay with one. The guy who bought it said it broke on the first run - so I sent him the other one. That broke too!

I got my Acoms 2.4Ghz set for £60 brand new. Had a bit of difficulty in reversing one of the channels (steering) cos manual a bit naff, but find it all works v well and response rates are excellent. I have always found Acoms stuff excellent value and have never had a problem with any of it. And have got 2 kids so have bought lots over the years. Some of my most ancient Acoms servos still work fine.

I have three of them, and not one has lost signal, and we have used them for 18 months.

For £60, you can't get any better, 10 model memory, digital trims, 2.4GHz and a fail safe.

Nothing like a good old debate on cheap radio sets is there! Thanks for all the advice - i have no idea what to do now!!!!!

Only joking - prob going for a chat at a shop but may stretch for Spektrum as no duff reports and I can only afford to do this once!

I disagree about the Acoms 2.4gHz stuff. We've had probably about 3 or 4 at my local track so far (different people, vehicles, and radios), and all of them glitch at least once on the track. One caused a run-away car to be caught up a tree.

I'd step up a little extra cash and get the DX3 from JE-Spares, it comes with two servos, and possibly two receivers.

I use a DX3R, though used a DX2 before that, and my uncle used a DX3.0 and now uses a DX3R, and we all had a nice, problem-free experience with them.

On the other hand I've seen a few people who's Spektrums had problems so it means nothing.
The Acoms is a cheap system - when it works it works fine, but quality control isn't the best and there are a few dodgy ones.

Mine has never glitched - it once lost bind mysteriously and had to be reset, but I've seen Spekkys do that too. It does get a very short range if the battery voltage drops too low (a problem with rechargables) but I fixed that with lipo power. Dry cells work fine.
The biggest problem is that its cheap, so its not that robust. I've killed one receiver and one transmitter in a years use. But at £30 a receiver and £25 for the tranny who cares?

Good points well made, Si.
Even the most expensive have problems from time to time.

I, however, am never going to 2.4gig. I'll stick with 40mhz as no-one else seems to use it anymore...

iv been using one for months now as have at least 4 others, i have not had a problem with it.

other 2.4ghz systems maybe better, but i like others race on a budget, so £60 is a good deal, the servos are ok for starting out if ran with a saver.

OK - went for the Spektrum - based on the fact that i dont want to have to spend on poss failures and breakages with the Acoms. I got the £114.99 deal from JE Spares with 2 servos and 2 rx.

Thanks for all the advice and fingers crossed.

Jnu
