Default Minor car upgrades..

Hello all,

Ive bought a Black Corsa for my first car but want to make it look a bit different without getting my ass spanked on the insurance.
I dont want to put stupid bodykits and spinners on though!
Ive de-badged it, got a stubby aerial and have got some wheels to go on it but thats about it. What else can i do that are minor and wont hurt my insurance too much and just makes it look that bit nicer?

Start the discussion

Won't the wheels affect it?

Basically, if you do anything to make it different your insurance will go up, because its more desirible (apparently)

Ooh the joys of your first car :-)

What about things like Colour coding any plastic bits?

Paint up your Calipers - nothing like Red but just a nice silver or something - anything that neatens it up or makes it look cleaner i think is always good.

Nice stereo system was always a must hehe

Just avoid things like Sun-strips, viper stripes, chrome stick on stuff in general......

Less is more ;-)

Maybe look out for 2nd hand bits on Ebay or things from Scrappy's such as a SRi Spoiler - if it's genuine Vauxhall parts i wouldn't consider that to be "chav" - not as if it's very big, just nice and subtle....

Most things will hurt on insurance but lowering with a nice set of Vauxhall rims (think of other models around the time, SRi, Vectra, Calibra etc would look nice but i guess that would cost too much to insure really....

Pretty much everything will affect your insurance, you'll need to notify them all the changes you make as if not and you have an accident they might not pay out. Different insurers will view things differently though.

I even told my insurers that I had a tow-bar fitted and nope I don't have a caravan.

i wouldn't bother doing anything to your first car because its very likely you will either crash it or write it off in some way.
just use it as a stepping stone to A- some no claims bonus (hopefully)
and B- getting some driving experience under your belt

you should maybe build a decent car while you are out there kerbing your shed

If you tell them what you have added they will be ok as long as it has,nt enhanced the performance. With the wheels they will only payout to return the car to standard manufacture,s equipment.

I would put spinning hubcaps on from Halfords, a Kenwood mask cd player, some of those cool washer jets with neons lights in them, slam it to the deck so you cant get into any car parks and then finish it off with some underbody neons. Trust me women love that stuff..........

spinning hub caps are ace and dont put some bake bean tin exhaust on it!! lil ben like nick said bit of hammerite on the calipers, dark wheels on a black car look nice dont paint em white , bit of colour coding hear , u could get away with a induction kit not visable but will give that lil lump sum air and a nice lil note and definatly get urself a nice head unit and some bass!!

Just kick the exhaust off. It'll sound like a WRC.

You can also get really cool whistles that you stick into your exhaust that are supposed to sound like a turbo. They are really good at annoying the crap out of anyone around you. Every time your car is running it sounds like a footy referee on steroids

Seriously though. Keep it clean and running smooth and invest any spare change in actually inviting women out, works way better than a fat exhaust or rims

A nice radio and a decent set of speakers running through an amp can be nice though, as long as you don't try and be heard from a mile off.

There are 2 important things to consider here.
Everything you do to the car will cost a fortune on your already expensive insurance. Back when I was young a set of alloys added nearly £500...
Everything you do to the car will devalue it. No-one wants to buy a car they think has been thrashed by a young lad. Even if it hasn't.
Your problem is that the car you bought (when repaired) is too nice. A £500 banger was always a better investment.

Ben you should be doing what you want dont do what others want.

Making your first car look like a dogs dinner is part of life.

Its pretty difficult to do anything these days with the fun police in full effect.

You should be looking at 1m square plastic to make some mudflaps that drag constantly on the floor, welding your doors up so you have to dive in Dukes of Hazard style, fitting a nitrus kit, fitting three quarters of a ton of 18inch speakers in the boot.

Think big

My first car was given so I pimped it up a bit, problem was the wheels added £150 a year to my insurance, which was already £1000. Modding it was more for the fun of it. I put everything on, Start button, DVD, Interior/exterior neons, very subtle body kit, all the interior bits like electy sunroof, new wheel an knob, pedals, alarm, remote central locking, and the rest. Good fun at the time.

After a week:

After 12 month:

The neons were a laugh but looked shite and were totally useless :

Oh a misguided youth lol.
