Weller Magnastat hands down. You set the temperature depending on what tip you use. 7-9 tips are the ones to look for for most soldering but you can use the smaller tips for small electronics stuff.

Had mine for years and still going strong!

I have a Weller WSD 81, bought it from oOple ages ago for £60, its the best thing since sliced bread and i know this because:

Its the one everyone borrows
Heats up to 450 in 10 secs (and fully adjustable)
Only ever had one tip which is still like new

and

Manolis built his driveshafts with it at the PetitRC 2009
Stu Evans told me its so good he even dreamt about it one night

Downside is theyre really expensive new but worth keeping an eye out for a second hander, mines never put a foot wrong.

I'm using a 60W "blue handle" Weller. Cost about £60 new from RS. Maybe not as effective as a soldering station, but cheaper and easy to cart around. Plus it uses the same high-quality replaceable tips.

Recommended by Olly Jefferies afew years ago and has never ever missed a beat.

Using a #9 chisel tip, gets fecking hot fecking fast!!

I've got the same as Sosidge suggests - Weller W101. It's temp controlled, so can be left on for long periods.

It's the dogs, had it for years!

I've had one of these bad boys from Maplin for a couple of years LINK it's not man enough to solder cells, but we don't need that anymore

Perfect for everything else and not bad priced at £30
