Hi All
I just wondered if people cut their machine screws down to the desired length, or always just buy ones of the correct length. For example, I have plenty of 10mm M3 cap screws, but need some 6mm. I've seen a website showing that this can be done using electricians pliers. However, are there any better methods. Is the finish on the end good enough not to wreck the threads in an expensive motor. Thanks |

I always use a cutting disc on a dremel.
Never had any problems |

Dremel, then get a file and just smooth the edges over.

if you dont have a dremmel you can thread a nut on the screw then either cut with a hacksaw or some pliers then file the end flat then remove the nut wich will clean the threads back up

Thanks for your advice. I don't have a dremmel , but I might get one of these as they sound pretty useful.

Never just cut the end off as you need to re thread the messed up end. Put a Nut on first as already said and cut it with a hacksaw then file any burrs off then just undo the nut.

make shure you put the nut on first before cutting or the chances are you will screw the threads ups then you wont get your nut on
