Smile Declaration of a new shell

Last year I said I would attempt a TRANSFORMERS movie inspired shell for my B4. Well I have got the paints now and am submersing myself in http://www.transformersmovie.com/main.html to come up with inspiration.

It's do or die now, It has to be ready for Tiverton and then you can judge for yourselves if it's any good. I am putting my limited ability at the mercy of you lot.. pictures to follow

Neil, just go for a nice, easy, single colour job in 'Optimus Prime' red.

Cool

All the masking is now complete...

I have an autobot logo on the 'bonnet', "TRANSFORMERS" written along each side, some geometrical shapes either side of the side windows and some stripes to the rear of the side windows. The Wing (not pictured) has a close up of the Autobot symbol (eyes and nose mostly) with the AUTOBOTS text along the top.

I was all done using liquid mask. I created all the images in Autocad, taped them to the front side of the shell and then cut from the rear. I have done this before for the lightening on my existing shell, but nothing to this scale...

Hope to start painting tomorrow. Mostly red, blue, silver and charcoal. Optmus Prime colours...

Should be easy to spot, Neil's will be the B4 that has transformed and is literally running around the Tiverton track.

Well it is finished. Over all, I am not happy. It was all going very well up until the last hour. I am very pleased with the side pods, behind the side windows and the roof. The masking and painting of the TRANSFORMERS text and the Autobot LOGO also went very well, but I surrounded backed these areas with totally the wrong colours. You see, I was worried that I had too much dark blue and charcoal on the rear of the shell, so used Flu red to try and highlight the TRANSFORMERS logo. Unfortunately the result is far too pink. These photos don’t show it close up in these areas (on purpose). The AUTOBOT logo on the bonnet masked off really well considering the detail, but the white behind this means it is lost and you can’t see it properly. Overall It is OK I guess but the feeling of satisfaction I had about an hour before completion has gone now....

On the bright side, I have learnt a few more painting techniques. I know a bit more about what works and what doesn’t. I have also learned how to slow my heart rate down while cutting liquid mask.. it requires much patience!

That is ace neil. I like the red.

Will you be racing it at club or will you be saving it for big events only.

hmm, I see what you mean. overall its not bad, its just the logo on the front dissapears in the pink/white. did you do the pink last? if you did and it is faskolor you could have washed it off. I've done that before. its a bitmore difficult when its fully dry though. If you had carried the blue on to the front it would have looked better. but overall it looks pretty good. I think i remember you saying its the first time you've tried anything like this, so its a good attempt with some good hand cut logos and text. You'll know what to do for the next one now.

Yes the pink was last, i knew it was too light as soon as i applied it so ran over the back of it with some Flu blue to darken it, this makes it kind of purple (the flash in the photo makes it lighter than real life). This is the troube with reverse painting isnt it? whatever hits the shell first stays there, its not like other model painting where you can spray over it...

well there is always the next shell.. another 80's toy shell? He Man? (only kidding).. maybe i will do knightrider or the A-team... just black and a little red.
