I want to do some regional and maybe national events this year. I want to keep my Mamba Max speedo but apparently the mamba motor isn't legal (i assume this still holds true) What other BL motors (sensorless) will work with my speedo?
Cheers. |

All of the Orion, Peak, LRP, Nosram, and basically ones with the sensored connectors slots or the wires to be plugged in. I used a 4.5 Peak with my Mamba and worked well.
Novak comes with the wire attached and wont work.

Not sure I understand - are you saying that the motors to use are ones which DO have sensor 'ports' on them, even though the Mamba Max is sensorless, or have I misunderstood?

Orion, Nosram, LRP do work and I have used with my Mamba. Do not buy a 4.5 as its too powerful for your esc (it over heats), but a 5.5 or 6.5 is a good choice.

Cheers lads.
Jono - see you Thursday. Welshy - thanks for the advice. I'll avoid a 4.5 (WAAAyyy too fast for me anyways!) Nice one. |

Alfonso, Welshy's right in that most sensored motors will run perfectly OK on the sensorless Mamba...but you also shouldn't have a problem with any motors that have the sensor cables hardwired to them either. Sorry Welshy, I'm not trying to burst your bubble. It makes no difference if a motor has the sensor cable hardwired to the motor, or if it just plugs in; this has no bearing on the Mamba's ability to run the motor (the Mamba will just run any motor as sensorless). That ability depends on the motor's actual electromagnetic design. There are a couple of odd motors out there that it doesn't get along with so well, but it'll run most of them just fine as long as you have the latest 1.20 firmware installed.
Unfortunately, there aren't many (if any, I'm not sure) sensorless-only motors out there that are BRCA-legal. Something like a Neu 1406 when it comes out, or Medusa Afterburner V2 would be amazing motors to use...but is just as illegal as the Castle CM36 motors unfortunately. The Mamba also shouldn't have any problems running low-turn motors, like a 4.5 or 3.5; it can handle more current than most other 1/10th speedos out there. Maybe there was something not quite right with your setup, Welshy? |

I did wonder about the motor limit issue as I believe the Mamba Max is good for 7700kv motors, but not sure if that is 'gruntier' than a 4.5. All academic as too much power for me
![]() I run the CM36 5700kv which has plenty of power, and I wouldn't change it if it were legal. Cheers guys. |

I,m pretty sure the Mtroniks p2 plasma sensorless motors are BRCA legal.

Looks good. And whilst I'm going on - what about a Tekin Redline motor and a Mamba Max?

I used to run mamba max's all the time and i found the best motors were Team Orions, My 1st gen team orion 3.5 was amazing with it with zero cogging. I have tried an LRP with it before and it didnt like in sensoreless at all.
And If you manage to overheat a mamba max with a 4.5 then well...thats just weird :P, The thing can handle 12 Cells and iv'e run 7.4v 3.5 lipo before with it and the thing doesn't even break sweat. These things are the Brick Sh**t House of ESC's ![]() Stef |

Good point, I'd not thought about the Redlines (and the Plasma). Last I heard, the Tekin Redlines were being considered by the BRCA but I don't know if they're actually legal (I'm not a racer myself). It'd definitely be a good idea to find out though. Looking at the specs, they should be very nice motors. I don't know from experience how well they run on the Mamba Max, but there's no reason why they shouldn't be just fine.

Welshy, you're welcome. Yup, you just have to make sure the sensor cable gets tucked out of the way. ![]() |

Not sure about the firmware query, I just intalled mine and clicked for latest update and it just did it automatically, but as the others say I think it is only V1.17. Seems excellent though and software a doddle to use. Maybe it's an operating sytem issue?
I have just bought one of these for my 4wd after reading many good things and have found the quality, set up and as I said software all excellent so far, I was just disappointed to find out that the motors are not BRCA legal. I run a Losi motor in my other car with LRP sphere and am chuffed with that. Anyone know if the Losi motors are ok to operate reliably and smoothly in sensorless mode? Alternatively, is there any chance that the Castle Creations motors could be legalised?

That's odd; it should show up as a firmware version in CastleLink. If you look in the right-most tab (or second from right, I can't remember exactly) then it should give you a list of available firmwares. What does it show?
As for the Castle CM36 motorsnot being legal...there's a whole big story about that. Castle didn't get to have much of a say in the rules for ROAR, and the BRCA took on similar tight ruling for some reason. Anyway, Castle have been talking about making changes to their CM36 motors to possibly make them legal...or at least, change the design (AFAIK, to update them to a slotted design) and try to make sure they have a good say next time the rules are revised. Don't quote me on any of that though lol. ![]() The sensorless Losi motors will run just fine of course, and their sensored motors *should* be ok...but it'd be worth asking around to see if anyone's tried that combination. Like I say, the Mamba doesn't get along with the odd few sensored motors for some reason. Edit: Simon, sounds like your download corrupted. Same thing happened to me. Re-download it, and it should be fine. ![]() |
