Default Front Belt

Recently purchased a XX-4 off ebay and front wheels weren't going, pulled cover off and discovered the belt

Any idea on what can cause this?

Also is it right to use the XX4 without the front belt and just use it as 2WD for now until belt arrives?

Looks like its snapped then been driven whilst broken hence going all stringy as it wraps itself around various parts.

Don't run it without the 4wd system is my opinion. Also check the gears that the belt has snapped on for wear and tear. If there is damage to those aswell it could minimise the life of your new belt.

Finally whatever you do set the slipper to prolong belt life, slipping 2-3 feet is about right.

It is very important that the drivetrain is running freely and the pulleys aren't mashed and the slipper is set right, I managed to lunch 3 belts in 1 meeting with my first time out with the car. Follow the guidelines in the instructions for initial setting up the slipper and then back it off slightly, try it and then just gradually tighten it until as the previous post says you have a little slip of a few feet.

Most people tend not to run speedo's with reverse, however the one-way clicker shouldn't really be effected by the reverse.

As an extra little point, it would definately be worth you replacing the standard one-way clicker spring with the heavy duty version. In some extreme circumstances some racers even take out the spring and install a small piece of silicone tubing.

Would shock fluid cause the belt to go crap? The bottom cap of one of the shocks came off and put oil all over the suspension arm. Not sure if it get into where the belt was though

The belt tunnels are pretty well sealled if oil did get on the belt it could cause it to slip possibly stripping the teath off. As for the clicker i put a big washer in and locked it.

Also as phil said get rid of reverse you dont need it. You will learn not to crash without it. (Mind i cant talk lol i still crash )

Last year while I was running XX4 I used loose clicker and I liked it more than locked.
To belt I stripped some teeth on belt but I never ended up with something like you got.

From my experience the belts simply rot when the car isn't used for a long time.
I suggest you replace the other 2 belts because they might snap within a few batteries if the car has been sitting for long enough.

Don't bother running the car as 2WD as the weight distribution is all wrong for it.

Reversing doesn't harm the clicker.

Be careful not to set the slipper too loose because the heat buildup can melt the pulley nearest to it if you use a strong motor and it is constantly slipping.

Avner.

I agree with Avner. It was probably one of the original Blue belts. I have had the same problem with rear belts on the Losi Street Weapon. I didn't use it for a while and the rubber from the belts just cracked up and then destroyed itself. I bought some number of new belts for it, but as the kit had been discontinued for some time the new belts were probably pretty old. These all melted in the same way as your.

Have a good look at the pulleys. when this happened to my belts it made a bit of a mess of them where the string reinforcement wrapped around them. Its worth replacing them at the same time as the belt.

Check all the other belts too, as they may be on there way out too, and just get green belts all round anyway.

Ben
