Default Tamiya M-chassis ball diff

I bought a Manta Ray ball diff (#53070) off ebay ages ago for my M03 Mini but never got round to doing anything with it. I've now got an M05 kit to build up but in the manual it shows the ball diff off the TA03 (#53267) as the preferred hop up.

The gear teeth on the Manta Ray diff look to be twice as wide as the TA03 ones so is the newer part more efficient (less contact area etc) or should I be able to use the Manta Ray part in my M05? I don't want to try it and find out it doesn't work as once I've opened the blister pack I'll have reduced it's value and I'd prefer to put it back on ebay and use the cash to go towards a replacement.

Any comments appreciated.
