Default Lens Question

I am half-way towards the cost of a Canon 400D. my question is which lens should i get if i am going to try and get a second bundled? the 18-55 is the standard but i see both 55-200 and 75-300 available (plus others), both Canon and Tamron types.

I was looking in Jessops...

http://www.jessops.com/Products/Sear...3&cl=1-136-143

I am no camera expert, this would be my first SLR. I want to take RC car photo's, WRC photo's plus general holiday and familiy stuff..

Help please guys!

Neil

I've just got a 400d with the kit lens (18-55) and it realy is better than I thought it would be. (although compared to my previous camera the canon is light years ahead anyway) But I obviously had it because it came with the kit, and if I had a choice I would probably choose a different lense with a bit more range or a f2.8 lens, but that will have to wait until I have a little more dosh because they are a bit expensive.

Yes, we have had a 400d for a few months now, Jessops deal, opted for the 55-200 which got off eBay (AJ Purdy), also picked up some cheap UV filters on eBay (HongKong).

Very pleased with camera, doing more than I expected, and doing it well. Still getting used to it, taking pictures of moving cars and keeping focus proving difficult, but we will adjust, snaps at other times easy peasy. 55-200 lens is working well, havent used the 300 so cannot compare, as shooting at 10mi pixels it easy to crop quit heavily, last weekend at Stotfold boy managed to put 441 pictures on a 2gig card !! should see one or two of these being worth a second look.

The better len's "L" seem to cost more than the camera & standard lens together, cannot see that we will go there for a long while.

Also as a BTB, very pleased with Picasa from Google, makes sorting a bit easier.

Neil, the Caonon outlet on ebay, as above, is ace - you'll get the best deal going. Don' buy a 400d from a high street shop.

Don't take any notice of the 'refurbished' note on the auction - this is just to keep Canon's hight street dealers happy - your camera will be brand new.

If it was me I'd buy...

or.....

and save enough money to buy.......

The 18-55 lense is OK, for what it is, but the 17-85 IS USM is so much better.

Before you buy a Canon though talk to Jimmy about Nikon's - he loves them.

Thank you guys, these are all excellent answers. The cannon refurb option looks ideal.

It woudl seem that not all 55-200 lenses are the same... can someone explain the differences?

Basically you get what you pay for. The main factors are optical quality, aperture rating and speed of the focus action.

Come talk to me or/and Jimmy at the weekend - we'll explain.

I have to fly out to Dubai with work early Sunday morning and i'm far from ready. Getting home late Saturday night only to get up at 5am will kill me as the week ahead will be a tough one. I hope someone on here gets my place...

See you guys at Oswestry
