Default Vintage - How quick?

Quick Q re the vintage cars that ran at York on Saturday - What do you run in them motor wise etc cos they were fast! Do you just have mid turn modified or are the old cars able to handle serious motors and even brushless? Dont tell me it was all stock motors or I'll be gutted, I was in the stock class and nowhere near your times.

I know a few of you can drive which helps (though watching a couple of you run round the track I'd guess you'd had a few sherbets in the afternoon - lol).

Also, quick thanks to a couple of you for your help re setting up speedos and gear advice to stop us overheating. Its appreciated.

they are 20 turn sealed can hpi jobbies - the ones that are allowed for the 540 class.
They guys are mostly (apart from me) really good drivers. My car is about the fastest one but it doesn't really steer which is a bit of a drawback.

My time with the 20 turn motor in the ProCat would have put me third overall in qualifying in full 4wd modified! Its not all about top speed it seems.

LiPo

I think northys car is a bit too good - I have to say these cars are a lot quicker than I'd imagined - I wanted to race my hornet also but in all reality it would be utterly left behind

Was the ProCat the purple one with the spoiler that looked like someone had sat on it? That was running really well. What was the funky little white shelled car that I think came 2nd?

If you guys had run your modern kit on the same track how much faster do you think you would you have been? Is there such a big difference?

Oh, and did any of the pics you took from under the ramp work out?

I think Northy was right when we were discussing the old vs. new on Sat. night, the old cars are very similar to the latest ones, similar materials used, belt drive etc they just aren't bling anymore, although G's ProCat rocks.

Will you accept my challenge G and run the Pro in a normal club meet???

Haha, I did run it in 4wd modified one night and qualified 7th I think, even with reliability issues all night (that's why I did it, to iron out the bugs). That night I have a 10 turn in it.

I could do it again I suppose.

Didn't spend any time taking pics really, none good enough really.

Got this of Damian's Optima 'cos it was it's first outing, nice thing it is, it was getting close to the Legend that is the Pro-Cat, only a fraction in at in the final.

I was surprised how well the funky little white thing (kyosho Optima-Mid) went.

I basically got it off one of my customers on Thursday afternoon and then spent most of Friday trying to fix various problems. The main one is that the steering would not re-centre so it wandered a bit.

Hopefully a new servo saver and maybe a Fet servo will sort it all out!

Got to beat that damn pro cat at the last round GRRRRRR!

It should also be said that the track on Saturday night was mostly slippy floor so the RC10's and Stu's JRX2 were at a disadvantage.

What with running my new LRP brushless in my X-5 (BLOODY QUICK), the white thing running better than expectations and the blast home on Saturday night over the lanes back to Lancashire with NO traffic, it was one of the best meetings for a long time!!!

"funky little white thing" was a term of endearment, no offence meant. lol.

You had some top tussles with the ProCat, especially the 3rd round where you held him off for most of the race. Entertaning stuff.

Is there a model in the vintage class thats like the "Holy Grail", an incredibly rare or valuable model that you'd all love to own?

I've already got mine, an RC10 worlds, lush.

I did however find a mate who says in his loft he has a mint optima mid, should I have enough time for the last round it might get a run out

I think on the smaller, tighter, indoor tracks the Procat would be capable of beating anything (not when driven by me anymore though )

No offence taken on the funky white thing, just thought it was a good description.

Back in 1987 when I was racing, the Cat and the Mid optima did battle every weekend. You tended to get the people who liked to set cars up running the Cat and the people who just liked to race running the Mid Optima (me).

Unfortunately not a lot of people could set the original Cat up very well and as Mids were easier they tended to prevail at the club I raced at, Mr Lawson being particularily successful.

I was really pleased how the Mid went and if Dan gets hold of one it will be very competitive at the last Vintage round at York!

Brilliant idea really, with a vintagerace Race what you got and have good time- should be pretty cheap too? I was very happy to se that there are some brave men racing hotshots and javelins. I am inspired to set up races here in sweden.
